9951 Water Study

In 9951 Water Study, from the Jerry Yarnell School of Fine Art PBS television series, Jerry guides beginning artists through an excellent two-part acrylic painting lesson demonstrating how to paint still transparent water and running water with waterfalls. This beginner-level instructional video is approximately 60 minutes and uses an 18 x 24 canvas. The first study features clear, shallow water with visible underwater rocks, pebbles, and subtle surface reflections. The second study demonstrates a beautiful cascading waterfall flowing over large, rugged rocks into a pool below, complete with white water, splashing effects, and realistic water movement.

In the first part of this painting lesson, Jerry demonstrates how to create the appearance of clear, transparent water while allowing submerged rocks and stones to remain visible beneath the surface. You'll learn how changes in value, color, highlights, and carefully controlled brushwork help distinguish underwater objects from surface reflections. Jerry also introduces fine art techniques for creating convincing water transparency, subtle ripples, and the natural appearance of rocks and pebbles seen through shallow water.

In the second part, Jerry demonstrates how to paint running water and cascading waterfalls flowing over and between large rock formations. You'll learn how directional brushstrokes, highlights, shadows, and contrasting values help capture the movement of falling water. This step-by-step acrylic painting tutorial explores techniques for creating flowing streams, white water, splashing effects, foaming water, and the appearance of water breaking against rocks. Jerry also shows how the surrounding rock formations help establish the waterfall's shape, direction, and natural movement.

Water Study is an excellent instructional lesson for beginning artists who want to improve their skills in painting realistic water, transparent streams, underwater rocks, waterfalls, ripples, and moving water. By demonstrating both still water and flowing water in one video, Jerry provides valuable fine art techniques that can be applied to landscape paintings featuring lakes, streams, rivers, waterfalls, and other natural water scenes. This focused two-part study is especially useful for artists who want to better understand how to paint the different appearances and behaviors of water.
