0904 Aspen Serenade (Oil) - From the Jerry Yarnell School of Fine Art PBS television series, Jerry guides intermediate artists through a beautiful water-mixable oil painting lesson featuring a peaceful autumn landscape filled with colorful aspen trees overlooking a quiet lake. This intermediate-level lesson is approximately 110 minutes and is painted on an 18 x 24 canvas. The finished painting features graceful aspen trees with pale, textured trunks and brilliant golden-yellow, orange, and reddish autumn leaves. A calm lake reflects the soft light of the sky, while distant blue-violet mountains, colorful woodland foliage, and sunlit meadow grasses create a beautiful fall landscape filled with warmth, depth, and natural beauty.

The brilliant autumn foliage and distinctive white aspen trunks are the most important features of this painting. Jerry demonstrates how to create natural-looking aspen trees with slender trunks, delicate branches, and clusters of colorful fall leaves. You'll learn how variations in yellow, orange, red, and darker shadow colors help give the foliage a lively, realistic appearance without painting every individual leaf. Special attention is given to the pale aspen bark, including its darker markings, subtle shadows, and carefully placed highlights that help define the rounded shape of the trunks. Jerry also explores fine art techniques for capturing the warm sunlight filtering through the colorful leaves and creating the beautiful contrast between the bright foliage and the darker woodland background.

Jerry uses water-mixable oil paints, which behave very much like traditional oil paints, offering rich colors, smooth blending, and similar working characteristics. However, they can be thinned and cleaned up with water, eliminating the need for the harsh solvents commonly used with traditional oil paints.
