0603 Impressions of Spring

In 0603 Impressions of Spring, from the Jerry Yarnell School of Fine Art PBS television series, Jerry guides beginning artists through a beautiful acrylic painting lesson featuring a peaceful spring countryside landscape. This beginner-level lesson is approximately 120 minutes and is painted on an 18 x 24 canvas. The finished painting features a winding dirt country road leading toward a charming white farmhouse, surrounded by fresh green fields, rustic wooden fences, colorful spring wildflowers, and tall trees beginning to display their seasonal foliage. A softly glowing pink-and-blue sky and distant birds complete this inviting rural scene.

Jerry demonstrates how to establish a balanced landscape composition and create a convincing sense of depth and distance using the winding country road, receding fence lines, and changes in value, color, and detail. You'll learn how to develop the road's natural curves and perspective so it draws the viewer's eye toward the distant farmhouse. Jerry also introduces fine art techniques for creating a soft, luminous spring sky and developing background trees that become lighter, softer, and less detailed as they recede into the distance, giving the countryside a realistic sense of space.

As the painting develops, Jerry demonstrates techniques for creating rustic fence posts, country roads, tree trunks, delicate branches, grassy hillsides, and colorful spring wildflowers. Special attention is given to the sunlit areas of the dirt road, where carefully placed highlights and shadows help establish the uneven surface and natural contours of the landscape. This step-by-step acrylic painting tutorial also explores how to develop the distant farmhouse, scattered roadside flowers, and soft spring foliage while maintaining the loose, natural appearance of the peaceful country setting.

Impressions of Spring is an excellent lesson for beginning artists who want to improve their skills in painting winding country roads, spring trees, rustic fences, wildflowers, distant farmhouses, and realistic landscape depth. Jerry's clear, step-by-step instruction brings these individual fine art techniques together to create a beautiful spring countryside painting filled with fresh seasonal colors, warm sunlight, natural textures, and the peaceful charm of rural life.
