8994 Red Wing Blackbird (Acrylic) From the Jerry Yarnell Inspiration of Painting PBS Television Series. In this beginner level acrylic painting lesson, Jerry guides you step-by-step through creating this elegant bird study in a 76 minute session on an 18x24 canvas.

A striking red-winged blackbird perches delicately among tall cattails, marsh grasses, and reeds against a soft misty background, creating a peaceful wildlife scene filled with subtle atmosphere and natural beauty. The fluffy white cattails become a major visual feature of the composition, contrasting beautifully with the dark bird and muted wetland setting.

You’ll learn how to paint the blackbird using layered brushwork to create smooth feather textures, clean edges, and the bird’s distinctive red and yellow wing markings. Jerry demonstrates how to block in the major shapes first, then gradually refine details to build realistic form and balance throughout the painting.

Special focus is given to painting cattails, tall marsh grasses, and reeds using soft blending and controlled strokes to create texture and movement without overworking the scene. You’ll also explore how to create atmospheric depth with subtle background transitions that help the bird and cattails stand out naturally as the focal point.
